Furlan Marri has revived the Disco Volante, infusing a modern twist into this vintage classic. Their new permanent Disco Volante line features three models that merge Art Deco elegance with contemporary flair, reminiscent of the vibrant 80s disco era. Originating in the late 1930s, Disco Volante, meaning “flying saucer” in Italian, is characterized by sleek round cases and large yet invisible lugs hidden beneath the case. The integrated crown preserves the fluid shape. Over the decades, these timepieces have evolved, maintaining their retro charm with jewelry-like finesse, and now Furlan Marri is breathing new life into this classic with a fresh perspective.
The two co-founders of Furlan Marri, Andrea Furlan and Hamad Al Marri, have reimagined the Disco Volante to suit modern trends. With a 38 mm case, slightly larger than the vintage 36 mm, this watch masterfully combines classic and contemporary elements. The rounded shapes and curved bezel add elegance, while the intricate, four-part dial with sharp crafted angles highlights Furlan Marri’s attention to detail. The dial is balanced with applied hour markers at 12, 3, and 9 o’clock, double-printed indicators and text, and a subdial displaying the small seconds at 6 o’clock. Different shades of Super-LumiNova enhance the hour, minute, and small second indicators, creating a luminous signature unique to each model.
Furlan Marri’s Disco Volante collection unveils three striking two-tone dials. The Havana Disco features a beautiful salmon with brown tones, reminiscent of the first Havana Salmon Mechaquartz watch. The Old Radium Super-LumiNova gives it a vintage vibe by day and a yellow-green glow by night. Disco Celeste, dressed in shades of blue and white, comes alive at night with the powerful BGW9 Super-LumiNova, shining in sky blue/white tones. Disco Verde, featuring a green and cream dial with Old Radium Super-LumiNova, offers a nod to classic elegance.
At the heart of these watches is the manually wound Peseux 7001 movement, a hallmark of Swiss watchmaking know-how. First marketed in 1971, this ultra-thin caliber is known for its reliability and precision. The Fabrique d’ébauches de Peseux SA, founded in 1923, eventually joined forces with ETA in 1985. The Caliber 7001 is one of Peseux SA’s most renowned calibers, designed for mass production but maintaining traditional watchmaking design.
With a thickness of just 2.5mm, Caliber 7001 is the perfect choice for Furlan Marri’s project, fitting seamlessly into the new 38 mm case. This manually wound watch revives the Art Deco style, featuring design codes from the 1930s to 1950s but with a modern intermediate case diameter. Furlan Marri has redesigned the bridges, incorporating hand-finished, diamond-polished edges, and black-polished crown wheel and screws, with all beveling done by hand in Geneva.
