In watchmaking, there exists a timepiece that goes beyond the ordinary, one that embodies the universe itself. This extraordinary, unique creation, known as COSMOPOLIS, is not just a watch; it’s a gateway to the cosmos. For two decades, its creator, Jean-Marie Schaller, has been curating a collection of meteorites, each possessing a unique story. These celestial treasures include the rare lunar meteorite Dhofar 461, the Martian meteorite, the ancient Allende, and Erg Chech, a relic from a vanished protoplanet.

These meteorites are more than just rocks; they are cosmic storytellers, witnesses to the birth and evolution of our solar system. They hold secrets that extend beyond our understanding of the universe. The awe-inspiring narratives of these meteorites inspired the birth of COSMOPOLIS, transcending the boundaries of traditional watchmaking to become a historical and scientific journey—a microcosm of the macrocosm.

The journey of COSMOPOLIS begins in the vast expanse of space, where meteorites, some older than Earth itself, have traversed billions of miles to find their home on our planet. These meteorites possess compositions so unique that their value surpasses even that of gold and platinum. They carry the stories of celestial forces, stars, and the enigma of life beyond Earth. Under Jean-Marie Schaller’s guidance, Les Ateliers Louis Monet has melded these cosmic treasures into a timepiece that connects us to the grandeur of the cosmos—the COSMOPOLIS. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and a tangible bridge between art and science.

In the spotlight, on September 21st in Geneva, Switzerland, COSMOPOLIS received the prestigious GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for “the most meteorite inserts in a watch.” This recognition extends far beyond the world of watchmaking, highlighting the boundless creativity of Jean-Marie Schaller and the dedicated artisans behind Louis Moinet watches. It’s a tribute to the network of friends and passionate supporters who have contributed to this remarkable achievement.

COSMOPOLIS encapsulates this exceptional timepiece’s essence—a fusion of cosmic wonder and timeless elegance. “Cosmo-” evokes the vastness of the cosmos, while “-polis” symbolizes the cultural and artistic spirit of the city. Together, they form a name that resonates with the fascination of space and the sophistication of watchmaking.

COSMOPOLIS unveils an aura of mystery, where time subtly emerges amidst meteorites, creating a celestial theater on the dial. Each meteorite fragment has been meticulously placed, forming a captivating constellation. At its center lies a lunar meteorite, a black chondrite, nestled within the tourbillon cage—the very heart of the mechanism. It serves as a reminder of the powerful cosmic forces that have shaped our universe.

Ten other meteorite fragments, each mounted on discreet bases, grace the dark grey brushed dial. Among them, Dhofar 461, a lunar meteorite, is a rare specimen from the Moon, while Dhofar 1674, a Martian meteorite, stands out with its greenish texture and astonishing value. The Allende meteorite, discovered during a meteorite shower in Mexico, is the oldest rock in the solar system, offering insights into its formation over 4.5 billion years ago. Erg Chech, an Algerian volcanic rock meteorite, predates Earth and exhibits a stunning green and brown appearance. Jbilet Winselman, found in Morocco, holds potential traces of cosmic life. These meteorites, along with others like Isheyevo, Aletai Armanty, Aguas Zarcas, Gibeon, Toluca, Sahara 97093, and the Black L5 chondrite, are witnesses to the origins of our solar system, carrying stories that span billions of years.

The COSMOPOLIS watch is not only a marvel of design but also a feat of engineering. It features an off-center tourbillon at 6 o’clock, spectacularly defying gravity. The hand-wound movement boasts two barrel springs, providing an impressive 96-hour power reserve. The innovative “volte-face” system places one barrel upside-down over the other, ensuring simultaneous energy delivery for extended autonomy.

Wrapped in an 18-ct, 5N rose gold case with a 40-millimeter diameter, COSMOPOLIS marries fluidity and precision. The technical sapphire crystal dome grants a mesmerizing view of the meteorite fragments below, while openworked lugs seamlessly integrate with the bracelet, enhancing the watch’s overall design. The manual movement, with a power reserve of 96 hours, is visible through the sapphire case back.
