In a bold move two decades ago, François-Paul Journe, founder of the watchmaking brand F.P. Journe, diverged from industry norms by opening a boutique under his own name in Tokyo’s Aoyama district. At a time when watch brands favored retailers for their distribution, Journe’s decision was driven by his deep admiration for Japan, a country that masterfully blends modernity with ancient traditions.

Located near the Nezu Museum in the Omotesando district, the F.P. Journe Boutique opened its doors in September 2003 within ‘La Collezione,’ an architectural masterpiece by Tadao Ando. Known as a national treasure in Japan, Ando’s minimalist style, characterized by geometric shapes and a subtle mastery of natural light, provided a perfect backdrop for the boutique. Initially housed on the 1st floor, a monumental double staircase added in April 2004 connected it to the ground floor, expanding the total area to 300 m².

Swiss metalworker Xavier Dietlin designed custom display cases named Archange to complement the staircase’s curves. These timeless sculptures are a consistent feature across all F.P. Journe Boutiques. The entire layout, planned by Seihachi Sagawa and François-Paul Journe, features unique elements that reflect the brand’s philosophy. Notable details include an original door handle modeled after the rotor of the Octa calibre and an interior rich with watchmaking history. Portraits of master watchmakers from the 17th and 18th centuries, antique tools, and a well-stocked library create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The boutique also features the world’s first watchmaking bar, where enthusiasts can gather for coffee and discuss their shared passion.

The Tokyo Boutique marked a significant milestone for F.P. Journe, paving the way for the brand’s global expansion. Today, F.P. Journe operates 12 Boutiques and Maisons worldwide, from Hong Kong to Geneva, Paris to New York. In honor of its loyal customers, François-Paul Journe has released several exclusive series over the years, beginning with the Tokyo Boutique Anniversaire Series in 2005. Each edition features a unique timepiece, such as the Chronomètre Souverain, Chronomètre à Résonance, Tourbillon Souverain, Octa Perpétuelle, and Centigraphe Souverain.

To celebrate 20 years in Japan, F.P. Journe hosted a special event at the Tokyo Boutique, drawing enthusiasts and collectors from around the world. The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the commemorative piece: the Chronographe FB. This latest model adheres to the aesthetic codes of previous versions, featuring a 40 mm polished Titanium case, 18K 6N Gold crown and pushers, and a ruthenium dial on Gold. It is paired with a burgundy alligator leather strap and an 18K 6N Gold folding clasp.

The Chronographe FB is powered by the new Calibre 1518.2, which includes a “fly-back” function, allowing the chronograph to reset and restart instantly with a simple push of the button at 4h. The tachymeter scale measures speed over a 1000m distance using the chronograph seconds hand, which completes one revolution in 2 minutes. The minute counter at 3h marks 60 minutes, with each jump equaling 2 minutes, while the movement’s second-hand counter is positioned at 9h. A large date display at 6h is subtly integrated into the ruthenium dial.

The Chronographe FB is limited to 200 pieces, a slightly larger run than usual. This watch will be the very last Limited Series by F.P. Journe, making it a highly significant and coveted collector’s item.

Price & Availability

The F.P. Journe Chronograph FB will be available in F.P. Journe boutiques. However, I am not sure that the word availability applies here, as I have a feeling the 200 pieces will not take long to sell out.
